So long a time ago was a little cityA
Where violence and crime were deep rooted and thrivingB
And in her bedlam dwelt a pious little ladC
A child of God who was God fearing and lovingB
-
This lad went about the city from dawn till duskD
Beseeching all to repent of their evil deedsE
For wise was he and he knew of the wrath to comeF
But none ever hearkened nor ever gave him heedG
-
At that time a very great king lived far awayH
Righteous was he and greatly feared among all landsI
For great was his kingdom and his host of armiesJ
Men of valour who constitute' a mighty bandK
-
News of this little city came to this king earsL
And at once was his wrath set upon the cityA
To overthrow the land and possess it at onceM
And procure an end to all their iniquityA
-
So the king anon summoned some of his servantsN
To spy the land if perchance some vice they might findO
With which to justify that of which hath been heardP
That if it chanced to be false he might change his mindO
-
So this men set out to perform the king's orderQ
Three sagacious men to visit the land to spyR
And each took along his items for the journeyA
Then with a parting word each bade his kindred byeR
-
The journey lasted three days on three donkeys backS
And when at last they got to the city's outskirtsT
At even they stopped and pitched their tent and restedU
Of all their labour and quenched their hunger and thirstV
-
Then afterwards when spirits and souls were revivedW
And the shadow of the night was fast drawing nearX
Two amongst these men arose to begin their questY
While one stayed to fend for the donkeys in his careZ
-
So the duo approached the city on legs that nightA2
And made it within just before the gates were shutB2
But found no place to pass the night or lay their headsC2
For the people of the land admitted them notD2
-
Thence did they sleep without a shelter over themE2
In the cold and wind of a keen wintery weatherQ
And alas the clouds poured heavily in torrentsN
And they both slept cuddled up with one anotherQ
-
Then at morrow both rose a great while before dawnF2
And were settled at different parts of the cityA
In guise of a sick beggar and a blind old manG2
Perhaps if some men would their conditions pityA
-
The sick beggar was settled at a certain streetH2
And in his disguise along the street he did lieR
In his wet costume with his bowl and a long stickI2
And shivering fervidly as one about to dieR
-
While the blind old man sat along another streetH2
While he leant upon a long stick with his legs crossed With a bowl before him his gaze was bent upwardsJ2
And he seemed bat blind as though his sight he'd long lostK2
