Verses Written In Westminster Abbey. [1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEFGGHHIIJJCCKK IILLMMNNOOPPQQRRASTT DDUUVVCCSSWX

Whoe'er thou art approach and with a sighA
Mark where the small remains of Greatness lieA
There sleeps the dust of Him for ever goneB
How near the Scene where once his Glory shoneC
And tho' no more ascends the voice of PrayerD
Tho' the last footsteps cease to linger thereD
Still like an awful Dream that comes againE
Alas at best as transient and as vainF
Still do I see while thro' the vaults of nightG
The funeral song once more proclaims the riteG
The moving Pomp along the shadowy IsleH
That like a Darkness fill'd the solemn PileH
The illustrious line that in long order ledI
Of those that lov'd Him living mourn'd Him deadI
Of those the Few that for their Country stoodJ
Round Him who dar'd be singularly goodJ
All of all ranks that claim'd Him for their ownC
And nothing wanting but Himself aloneC
Oh say of Him now rests there but a nameK
Wont as He was to breathe ethereal flameK
Friend of the Absent Guardian of the DeadI
Who but would here their sacred sorrows shedI
Such as He shed on NELSON'S closing graveL
How soon to claim the sympathy He gaveL
In Him resentful of another's wrongM
The dumb were eloquent the feeble strongM
Truth from his lips a charm celestial drewN
Ah who so mighty and so gentle tooN
What tho' with War the madding Nations rungO
'Peace ' when He spoke dwelt ever on his tongueO
Amidst the frowns of Power the tricks of StateP
Fearless resolv'd and negligently greatP
In vain malignant vapours gather'd roundQ
He walk'd erect on consecrated groundQ
The clouds that rise to quench the Orb of dayR
Reflect its splendour and dissolve awayR
When in retreat He laid his thunder byA
For letter'd ease and calm PhilosophyS
Blest were his hours within the silent groveT
Where still his god like Spirit deigns to roveT
Blest by the orphan's smile the widow's prayerD
For many a deed long done in secret thereD
There shone his lamp on Homer's hallow'd pageU
There listening sate the hero and the sageU
And they by virtue and by blood alliedV
Whom most He lov'd and in whose arms He diedV
Friend of all Human kind not here aloneC
The voice that speaks was not to Thee unknownC
Wilt Thou be miss'd O'er every land and seaS
Long long shall England be rever'd in TheeS
And when the Storm is hush'd in distant yearsW
Foes on thy grave shall meet and mingle tearsX
