Autumn thy rushing blastA
Sweeps in wild eddies byB
Whirling the sear leaves pastA
Beneath my feet to dieB
Nature her requiem singsC
In many a plaintive toneD
As to the wind she flingsC
Sad music all her ownD
-
The murmur of the rillE
Is hoarse and sullen nowF
And the voice of joy is stillE
In grove and leafy boughF
There's not a single wreathG
Of all Spring's thousand flowersH
To strew her bier in deathI
Or deck her faded bowersH
-
I hear a spirit sighB
Where the meeting pines resoundJ
Which tells me all must dieB
As the leaf dies on the groundJ
The brightest hopes we cherishK
Which own a mortal trustL
But bloom awhile to perishK
And moulder in the dustL
-
Sweep on thou rushing windM
Thou art music to mine earN
Awakening in my mindM
A voice I love to hearN
The branches o'er my headO
Send forth a tender moanD
Like the wail above the deadO
Is that sad and solemn toneD
-
Though all things perish hereN
The spirit cannot dieB
It owns a brighter sphereP
A home in yon fair skyB
The soul will flee awayQ
And when the silent clodB
Enfolds my mouldering clayQ
Shall live again with GodB
-
Where Autumn's chilly blastB
Shall never strip the bowersH
Or icy Winter castB
A blight upon the flowersH
But Spring in all her bloomR
For ever flourish thereS
And the children of the tombR
Forget this world of careS
-
The children who have passedB
Death's tideless ocean o'erT
And Hope's blest anchor castB
On that bright eternal shoreU
Who sought through Him who bledB
Their erring race to saveV
A Sun whose beams shall shedB
A light upon the graveV
