What ails my love where can he beA
He never broke a vowB
Though twice the clock's reminded meA
That he's deceiv'd me nowB
Through some bad girl I well know thatC
Poor Peggy's love's forgotD
Thus sigh'd a lass as down she satC
On the appointed spotD
-
The night was gathering dark and deepE
But absent was the swainF
The dews on many a flower did weepE
But Peggy wept in vainF
And every noise that meets her earG
And fancy of her eyeH
Hope instant wipes away the tearI
And paints the shepherd nighH
-
Ah now he comes my cheek glows hotD
His dog barks to the sheepE
Alas her own dog lay forgotD
Loud whimpering in his sleepE
He rustles down the wood path parkJ
The boughs hung o'er it stirr'dK
Alas her Rover's dreaming barkJ
Awoke a startled birdK
-
Again he look'd and once againL
Hop'd she her love should seeA
A glimpse of moonlight checq'd the plainF
Ah here he comes 'tis heA
The trees hung o'er the shady wayM
'Twas but a shadow'd oakN
The stock dove wak'd the mimic layM
Ah there my Henry spokeN
-
Ah this is he I know his treadO
Again her hope's a dreamP
Her wandering cows had left their shedO
And jump'd across the streamP
Ah then he spoke 'twas Henry plainF
She felt she knew not howB
Alas the clock but told againL
That he had broke his vowB
-
When wearied out her home she seeksQ
Where nought could please her viewR
The tear stole silent down her cheeksQ
Two rose leaves in the dewR
Her auburn hair with sweetest graceS
That down her temples spreadO
The night breeze wip'd it from her faceS
And kiss'd her in his steadO
