He never broke a vow | B |
Though twice the clock's reminded me | A |
That he's deceiv'd me now | B |
Through some bad girl I well know that | C |
Poor Peggy's love's forgot | D |
Thus sigh'd a lass as down she sat | C |
On the appointed spot | D |
- | |
The night was gathering dark and deep | E |
But absent was the swain | F |
The dews on many a flower did weep | E |
But Peggy wept in vain | F |
And every noise that meets her ear | G |
And fancy of her eye | H |
Hope instant wipes away the tear | I |
And paints the shepherd nigh | H |
- | |
Ah now he comes my cheek glows hot | D |
His dog barks to the sheep | E |
Alas her own dog lay forgot | D |
Loud whimpering in his sleep | E |
He rustles down the wood path park | J |
The boughs hung o'er it stirr'd | K |
Alas her Rover's dreaming bark | J |
Awoke a startled bird | K |
- | |
Again he look'd and once again | L |
Hop'd she her love should see | A |
A glimpse of moonlight checq'd the plain | F |
Ah here he comes 'tis he | A |
The trees hung o'er the shady way | M |
'Twas but a shadow'd oak | N |
The stock dove wak'd the mimic lay | M |
Ah there my Henry spoke | N |
- | |
Ah this is he I know his tread | O |
Again her hope's a dream | P |
Her wandering cows had left their shed | O |
And jump'd across the stream | P |
Ah then he spoke 'twas Henry plain | F |
She felt she knew not how | B |
Alas the clock but told again | L |
That he had broke his vow | B |
- | |
When wearied out her home she seeks | Q |
Where nought could please her view | R |
The tear stole silent down her cheeks | Q |
Two rose leaves in the dew | R |
Her auburn hair with sweetest grace | S |
That down her temples spread | O |
The night breeze wip'd it from her face | S |
And kiss'd her in his stead | O |
