Publisher: Penguin
Published Date: 2000

Clare's highly personal evocations of landscape and place are some of the most poignant lyrics in English poetry. His celebration of all forms of natural life and his laments for the death of rural England grew directly out of his intimate knowledge of the labourer's life, the wheatfields and hedgerows of his village in Northamptonshire. This authoritative and engaging selection includes poems from every stage of Clare's poetic career, organised by theme, from 'Birds and Beasts' to 'Madhouses, Prisons and Whorehouses'.

From frozen January to the long hot days of harvest, from the bursting sweetbriar leaves of March to Christmas plum cake and elderberry wine - John Clare's Shepherd's Calendar brings the country year to life with unparalleled intimacy. The cycle of the natural world and the seasonal round of village life are interwoven in descriptions that are both exact and eloquent. Now, for the first time, Clare's final manuscript version and the first published edition of the poem are presented side by side. Tim Chilcott explores the relationship between them in an introduction, and Clare's words are illuminated by Carry Akroyd's linocuts.

rodney lipan : john clare you are one of the best writer of any nature of love poem
Ioana Virginia Bolba: John Clare is a wonderful poet. At first sight, one may think he is superficial, but going into details, we discover an intuitive poet, writing only about what he himself felt (not thought), and offering an interesting life lesson, an example of how we should enjoy small things and, most of all, against that rude running after money and not understanding what life actually means.

Your cover is wrinkled,
And stained and sprinkled,
And warped and crinkled
From sleep on the grass.
