The Wise Men came to the inn that nightA
Now open to us they criedB
We have journeyed far that we might kneelC
To One who doth here abideB
-
The door was opened with eager hasteD
Of whom do ye come in questE
Can it be that a lord of high degreeF
Is with us this night as guestE
-
The Wise Men answered The eastern skyG
Is luminous still and clearH
With the radiance of a golden starI
That hath led our footsteps hereJ
-
Blessed O keeper this inn of thineK
Both thatch and foundation stoneL
For the open door and hearth fire warmM
When the King came to His ownL
-
The King the King loud the keeper's cryG
The King in this house of mineK
Lights ho lights ho set the place aglowN
Bring forth the meat and the wineK
-
The King let the guest room be preparedO
Honor and homage we payP
To royal son of a royal lineK
Who tarries with us to dayP
-
From room to room of the inn they wentQ
The Wise Men and keeper proudR
But not a trace of the One they soughtS
Found they in that motley crowdR
-
You have other guests the Wise Men askedT
And the keeper's face flamed redU
But a straggling pair who came so lateV
They found neither room nor bedU
-
My masters a lad said timidlyF
As I gave the cattle feedW
Came creeping down to the stable doorX
A woman in sorest needW
-
I made her a bed in the manger lowN
At head of the oxen mildY
And masters I heard a moan of painZ
Then the cry of a new born childY
-
A prince shalt thou be the Wise Men criedB
For hearkening to that moanL
A prince shalt thou be for succor givenA2
When the King came to His ownL
-
Nay I'm but a stable boy he smiledY
With his eager eyes aglowN
No King but a little naked childY
Sleeps out in my manger lowN
-
-
-
Hast come to these homes of ours O ChristB2
In quest of a meal or bedU
And found no welcoming cheer set forthC2
Nor place to pillow thine headU
-
Give us a heart aflame with loveD2
Filled with a pity divineK
Then come Thou as beggar or babe or kingE2
The best that we have is ThineK
