Rhyme Scheme: ABACD DEFGFE HHIIJKJ LM NAA

The Protecting TreeA
Of the men of the land of F lB
What aileth theeA
And why is it that allC
About thee grievesD
-
Alas O Tree of the LeavesD
Here is thy rhymeE
Thy bloom is lightenedF
And if thy fruit be witheredG
Thy root hath not tightenedF
At the same timeE
-
Not since the Gael was soldH
At Aughrim Not since to coldH
Dull death went Owen RoeI
Not since the drowning of Clann Adam in the days of NoeI
Brought men to hushJ
Has such a tale of woe come to usK
In such a rushJ
-
The true flower of the blood of the place is fallenL
The true clean wheat of the Gael is reapedM
-
Destruction be upon DeathN
For he has come and taken from our treeA
The topmost blackberryA
