Being born and raised on the continent of Africa
Post Apartheid days in the Rainbow Nation, South Africa
Sitting in a classroom filled with so many shades
A privilege my ancestors fought for in countless decades
I walked quietly in the white neighbourhoods
Carrying my books in my bag
I had to pass every test like I should
And get that degree my parents never had
This was my ancestors' dream
For a fair livelihood irregardless of their skin
I had that privilege and more could be done
Being black is not a crime and that should be a norm for generations to come
Now today I have a dream
That a black child will never experience poverty
They should acquire the best education of their ability
Lead organizations instead of gangs
Be in summits instead of jail
Be a societal inspiration instead of a threat
Rule the world and fly in private jets
Not being another crime statistic due to the oppression put on them because the colour of their skin
Black child this is what I envision for you in my dream
