Goethe who saw and who foretoldA
A world revealedB
New springing from its ashes oldA
On Valmy fieldB
-
When Prussia's sullen hosts retiredC
Before the advanceD
Of ragged starved but freedom firedE
Soldiers of FranceD
-
If still those clear Olympian eyesF
Through smoke and rageG
Your ancient Europe scrutinizeF
What think you SageG
-
Are these the armies of the LightH
That seek to drownI
The light of lands where freedom's fightH
Has won renownI
-
Will they blot also out your nameJ
Because you praiseK
All works of men that shrine the flameJ
Of beauty's waysK
-
Wherever men have proved them greatL
Nor drunk with prideM
Saw but a single swollen StateL
And naught besideM
-
Nor dreamed of drilling Europe's mindN
With threat and blowO
The way professors have designedN
Genius should goO
-
Or shall a people rise at lengthP
And see and shakeQ
The fetters from its giant strengthP
And grandly breakQ
-
This pedantry of feud and forceR
To man untrueS
Thundering and blundering on its courseR
To death and rueS
