It was in the early morningA
Of life and of hope to meB
I sat on a grassy hillsideC
Of the Isle beyond the seaB
Erin's skies of changeful beautyB
Were bending over meB
-
The landscape emerald tintedD
Lying smiling in the sunE
The grass with daisies sprinkledF
And with shamrocks over runE
The Maine water flashed and dimpledF
Still flowing softly onG
-
The lark in the blue above meB
A tiny speck in the skyH
Rained down from its bosom's fulnessB
A shower of melodyB
Dropping through the golden sunlightI
And sweetly rippling byH
-
Afar in the sunny distanceB
O'er the river's further brimJ
Like a stern old Norman warderK
Stood the castle tall and grimJ
And nearer a grassy ruinE
Where an old name grew dimJ
-
I knew that the balmy gladnessB
Was brooding from sea to seaB
But I felt a note of sadnessB
That sobered my youthful gleeB
The love of my mother ErinL
Stirred all my heart in meB
-
Oh Erin my mother ErinL
Thou land of the tearful smileM
Hearts that feel and hands of helpingA
Are thy children's blessed Isle'M
The stranger is so no longerK
That rests on thy breasts awhileM
-
Be he Saxon Dane or NormanE
That steps on thy kindly shoreN
Who sets his foot on thy daisiesB
Is kinder for evermoreN
For thy cead mille failthaO
Thrills warm to his bosom's careP
-
But Erin never contentedQ
Struggles again and againR
As all proud and free born captivesB
Must strive with the conqueror's chainS
That if ever snapped asunderK
Is riveted firm againR
-
The words of an Hebrew exileM
Like to some sweet song's refrainS
That sweetly goeth and comethO
And echoes through heart and brainS
Be sure that the day is comingA
When Erin shall rise againR
-
She only of all the nationsB
Since in dust our temple liesB
Has not our blood on our garmentsB
Has brought no tears to our eyesB
He says they prosper who love usB
Thy Erin at last shall riseB
-
I waited watched for the blessingA
Promised oh so long agoT
I looked for the brilliant futureK
The end of the long drawn woeT
My hopes with my years Time the reaperK
Hath laughingly laid them lowT
-
Oh Erin my mother ErinL
Will to be repeat what has beenL
Will your sons ever shoulder to shoulderK
Be strong and united seenU
Will ever the foreign liliesB
Blend with the nation's greenU
-
For in other lands the peoplesB
Quite forgetting ancient wrongV
Have blended and fused becomingA
Because of their union strongV
Leaving all old feuds and battlesB
As themes for romance and songV
-
From party's Promethean vultureK
When wilt thou get releaseB
When will the strife of racesB
The strife of religions ceaseB
And the hearts of thy loving childrenE
Mingle and be at peaceB
