Upon her bosom with its gentle eyes | C |
Folded in sleep as if its soul had gone | D |
To whisper the baptismal vow in Heaven | E |
The prayer went up devoutly and the lips | F |
Of the good man glowed fervently with faith | G |
That it would be even as he had pray'd | H |
And the sweet child be gather'd to the fold | I |
Of Jesus As the holy words went on | J |
Her lips mov'd silently and tears fast tears | K |
Stole from beneath her lashes and upon | J |
The forehead of the beautiful child lay soft | L |
With the baptismal water Then I thought | M |
That to the eye of God that mother's tears | K |
Would be a deeper covenant which sin | N |
And the temptations of the world and death | O |
Would leave unbroken and that she would know | P |
In the clear light of heaven how very strong | Q |
The prayer which press'd them from her heart had been | N |
In leading its young spirit up to God | R |
