The Baptism Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKJLMKNOPQN R

She stood up in the meekness of a heartA
Resting on God and held her fair young childB
Upon her bosom with its gentle eyesC
Folded in sleep as if its soul had goneD
To whisper the baptismal vow in HeavenE
The prayer went up devoutly and the lipsF
Of the good man glowed fervently with faithG
That it would be even as he had pray'dH
And the sweet child be gather'd to the foldI
Of Jesus As the holy words went onJ
Her lips mov'd silently and tears fast tearsK
Stole from beneath her lashes and uponJ
The forehead of the beautiful child lay softL
With the baptismal water Then I thoughtM
That to the eye of God that mother's tearsK
Would be a deeper covenant which sinN
And the temptations of the world and deathO
Would leave unbroken and that she would knowP
In the clear light of heaven how very strongQ
The prayer which press'd them from her heart had beenN
In leading its young spirit up to GodR
