Last night she came unto meA
And kneeling by my sideB
Laid her head upon my bosomC
My beautiful my brideB
My lost one with her soft dark eyesD
And waves of sunny hairE
I smoothed the shining tressesF
With tearful fond caressesF
And words of thankful prayerE
-
And then a thrill of doubt and painG
My jealous heart swept o'erH
We were parted she was dwellingI
Upon a far off shoreJ
Yet He who made my sad heart knewK
I loved her more and moreJ
My love more true and perfect grewK
As each dark day passed o'erH
But she whose heart had been my ownL
Who loved me tenderlyA
Whose last low words I knelt to hearM
Were How can I leave theeA
-
And Death would seem as sweet as lifeN
Could we together beA
Now though we two were partedO
By such a distance wideB
By such a strange and viewless realmP
By such a boundless tideB
Her gentle face was radiantQ
With a surpassing blissR
She was happier in that distant landS
Than she ever was in thisR
And in some other tendernessT
Some other love divineU
She had found a peace and happinessT
She never found in mineU
-
So with a tender chidingI
I could not quite suppressV
Though well my darling knewK
I would not make her pleasures lessV
Are you happy love I saidW
Are you happy love without meA
Then she raised her gentle headW
And twined her arms about meA
Yet while my tears fell fasterH
Beneath her mute caressV
Her face had all the gloryA
Of a sainted soul at restX
And her voice was sweet as musicY
I am happy I am blestX
-
Do you know how lonely heartedO
I have been each weary dayZ
Praying that each passing hourH
Would bear my life awayZ
That we might be unitedO
Upon that distant shoreJ
-
Laurence we are not partedO
I am with your evermoreJ
-
I cannot see you darlingI
Your face I cannot seeA
-
Can you see the moon's white fingersA2
That leads the pleading seaA
Can you see the fragrance lingeringI
Where summer roses beA
The soft winds tender claspingI
The close enwrapping airE
Enfolding you Oh LaurenceB2
I am with you everywhereE
-
Then while her face grew brighterH
As with a heavenly glowC2
In tenderness unspeakableD2
She kissed my lips and browE2
Then I lost her then she left meA
As at the set of dayZ
The snowy clouds float outwardF2
And melt in light awayZ
I heard low strains of melodyA
No earthly choir could singI
A light breath floated past meA
As from a gliding wingI
And on my darkened spiritG2
There fell so bright a gleamH2
I knew the blessed visionI2
Was not in truth a dreamH2
Though death had won from my embraceJ2
My beautiful my brideB
I had won a richer treasureH
An angel by my sideB
-
The Father careth for us allK2
In pity and I knowC2
My love is not forever goneL2
From him who loved her soC2
When a few more days have driftedO
Their shadows over meA
When the golden gates are liftedO
My angel I shall seeA
Her veiled face in its gloryA
Upon my gaze will riseD
And Heaven will shine upon meA
Through the sweetness of her eyesD
