Independence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD CEEF GHIJJ KCEL MMNO OPQR OOOS OTCCO ULVC

Freedom but in chainsA
Decades of judicial freedomB
But the caprices and cacophonyC
of corruption hold us captivesD
-
Decades of mental slaveryC
Who will redeem usE
Misery pain and shame mock at usE
Hell on earthF
-
Our tongues are powerfulG
To wage war with the teeth and lipsH
Our fists enfeebled by fear of deathI
In our match box housesJ
Hunger slaps our facesJ
-
Our thumbs blamedK
For what we seeC
Who did this to usE
Should we expect another messiahL
-
Each transition of powerM
Is like from frying pan to fireM
We are suffering and smilingN
Weak to carry placardsO
-
We are sycophantsO
Ready to be slaughteredP
On the altar of greed and corruptionQ
Indepndantly dependentR
-
Our past elites are patriotsO
Whose selfless servicesO
Are monumental in our mindsO
Their souls frown at our crawling stageS
-
Though many departed elitesO
Whose fingers are stainedT
Are wailing in purgatoryC
Impatiently waiting for our saintlyC
prayersO
-
On this auspicious dayU
We celebrate the lion of AfricaL
Whose strength is weakenedV
By religious apartheid tribalism and ethnicityC

Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke

Poet's note: This is a political poem. It's mocks and satires the crawling stage of Nigeria after her independence. Nigeria is virtually backwards in everything. Nothing seems to be working. We celebrate independence but nothing to show for it. Years of mental Slavery as been the order of the day. We hope for a messiah who will wipe our gummy tears.
