Thou scarest me with dreamsA
JOBB
-
When Night's last hours like haunting spirits creepC
With listening terrors round the couch of sleepC
And Midnight brooding in its deepest dyeD
Seizes on Fear with dismal sympathyE
I dreamed a dream something akin to fateF
Which Superstition's blackest thoughts createF
Something half natural to the grave that seemsA
Which Death's long trance of slumber haply dreamsA
A dream of staggering horrors and of dreadG
Whose shadows fled not when the vision fledG
But clung to Memory with their gloomy viewH
Till Doubt and Fancy half believed it trueH
-
That time was come or seem'd as it was comeI
When Death no longer makes the grave his homeJ
When waking spirits leave their earthly restK
To mix for ever with the damn'd or blestK
When years in drowsy thousands counted byD
Are hung on minutes with their destinyE
When Time in terror drops his draining glassL
And all things mortal like to shadows passL
As 'neath approaching tempests sinks the sunM
When Time shall leave Eternity begunM
Life swoon'd in terror at that hour's dread birthN
As in an ague shook the fearful EarthN
And shuddering Nature seemed herself to shunM
Whilst trembling Conscience felt the deed was doneM
-
A gloomy sadness round the sky was castO
Where clouds seem'd hurrying with unusual hasteP
Winds urged them onward like to restless shipsQ
And light dim faded in its last eclipseQ
And Agitation turn'd a straining eyeD
And Hope stood watching like a bird to flyD
While suppliant Nature like a child in dreadG
Clung to her fading garments till she fledG
-
Then awful sights began to be reveal'dR
Which Death's dark dungeons had so long conceal'dR
Each grave its doomsday prisoner resign'dS
Bursting in noises like a hollow windS
And spirits mingling with the living thenT
Thrill'd fearful voices with the cries of menT
All flying furious grinning deep despairU
Shaped dismal shadows on the troubled airU
Red lightning shot its flashes as they cameV
And passing clouds seem'd kindling into flameV
And strong and stronger came the sulphury smellW
With demons following in the breath of hellW
Laughing in mockery as the doom'd complain'dX
Losing their pains in seeing others pain'dX
-
Fierce raged Destruction sweeping o'er the landY
And the last counted moment seem'd at handY
As scales near equal hang in earnest eyesZ
In doubtful balance which shall fall or riseZ
So in the moment of that crushing blastO
Eyes hearts and hopes paused trembling for the lastO
Loud burst the thunder's clap and yawning rentsA2
Gash'd the frail garments of the elementsB2
Then sudden whirlwinds wing'd with purple flameV
And lightning's flash in stronger terrors cameV
Burning all life and Nature where they fellW
And leaving earth as desolate as hellW
The pleasant hues of woods and fields were pastO
And Nature's beauties had enjoyed their lastO
The colour'd flower the green of field and treeE
What they had been for ever ceased to beE
Clouds raining fire scorched up the hissing dewsC2
Grass shrivell'd brown in miserable huesC2
Leaves fell to ashes in the air's hot breathD2
And all awaited universal DeathD2
The sleepy birds scared from their mossy nestK
Beat through the evil air in vain for restK
And many a one the withering shades amongE2
Wakened to perish o'er its brooded youngE2
The cattle startled with the sudden frightF2
Sicken'd from food and madden'd into flightF2
And steed and beast in plunging speed pursuedG2
The desperate struggle of the multitudeG2
The faithful dogs yet knew their owners' faceH2
And cringing follow'd with a fearful paceH2
Joining the piteous yell with panting breathD2
While blasting lightnings follow'd fast with deathD2
Then as Destruction stopt the vain retreatI2
They dropp'd and dying lick'd their masters' feetI2
-
When sudden thunders paus'd loud went the shriekJ2
And groaning agonies too much to speakJ2
From hurrying mortals who with ceaseless fearsK2
Recall'd the errors of their vanish'd yearsK2
Flying in all directions hope bereftL2
Followed by dangers that would not be leftL2
Offering wild vows and begging loud for aidM2
Where none was nigh to help them when they pray'dM2
None stood to listen or to soothe a friendN2
But all complained and sorrow had no endN2
Sons from their fathers fathers sons did flyD
The strongest fled and left the weak to dieD
Pity was dead none heeded for anotherO2
Brother left brother and the frantic motherO2
For fruitless safety hurried east and westK
And dropp'd the babe to perish from her breastK
All howling prayers that would be noticed neverO2
And craving mercy that was fled for everO2
While earth in motion like a troubled seaE
Open'd in gulfs of dread immensityK
Amid the wild confusions of despairU
And buried deep the howling and the prayerU
Of countless multitudes and closed and thenT
Open'd and swallow'd multitudes againT
-
Stars drunk with dread roll'd giddy from the heavenM
And staggering worlds like wrecks in storms were drivenM
The pallid moon hung fluttering on the sightK
As startled bird whose wings are stretch'd for flightK
And o'er the East a fearful light begunM
To show the sun rise not the morning sunM
But one in wild confusion doom'd to riseZ
And drop again in horror from the skiesZ
To heaven's midway it reel'd and changed to bloodK
Then dropp'd and light rushed after like a floodK
The heaven's blue curtains rent and shrank awayP2
And heaven itself seem'd threaten'd with decayP2
While hopeless distance with a boundless stretchQ2
Flash'd on Despair the joy it could not reachR2
A moment's mockery ere the last dim lightK
Vanish'd and left an everlasting NightK
And with that light Hope fled and shriek'd farewellW
And Hell in yawning echoes mock'd that yellW
-
Now Night resumed her uncreated vestK
And Chaos came again but not its restK
The melting glooms that spread perpetual stainsS2
Kept whirling on in endless hurricanesS2
And tearing noises like a troubled seaE
Broke up that silence which no more would beE
-
The reeling earth sank loosen'd from its stayP2
And Nature's wrecks all felt their last decayP2
The yielding burning soil that fled my feetK
I seem'd to feel and struggled to retreatK
And 'midst the dread of horror's mad extremeT2
I lost all notion that it was a dreamT2
Sinking I fell through depths that seem'd to beE
As far from fathom as EternityE
While dismal faces on the darkness cameV
With wings of dragons and with fangs of flameV
Writhing in agonies of wild despairsU2
And giving tidings of a doom like theirsU2
I felt all terrors of the damn'd and fellW
With conscious horror that my doom was hellW
And Memory mock'd me like a haunting ghostK
With light and life and pleasures that were lostK
As dreams turn night to day and day to nightK
So Memory flash'd her shadows of that lightK
That once bade morning suns in glory riseZ
To bless green fields and trees and purple skiesZ
And waken'd life its pleasures to beholdK
That light flash'd on me like a story toldK
And days mis spent with friends and fellow menT
And sins committed all were with me thenT
The boundless hell whose demons never tireO2
Glimmer'd beneath me like a world on fireO2
That soul of fire like to its souls entomb'dK
Consuming on and ne'er to be consum'dK
Seem'd nigh at hand where oft the sulphury dampsV2
O'er aw'd its light as glimmer dying lampsV2
Spreading a horrid gloom from side to sideK
A twilight scene of terrors half descriedK
Sad boil'd the billows of that burning seaE
And Fate's sad yellings dismal seem'd to beE
Blue roll'd its waves with horrors uncontrolledK
And its live wrecks of souls dash'd howlings as they roll'dK
-
Again I struggled and the spell was brokeW2
And 'midst the laugh of mocking ghosts I wokeW2
My eyes were open'd on an unhoped sightK
The early morning and its welcome lightK
And as I ponder'd o'er the past profoundK
I heard the cock crow and I blest the soundK
