Marvels of sleep grown coldA
Who hath not longed to foldA
With pitying ruth forgetful of their blissB
Those cherub forms that lieC
With none to watch them nighC
Or touch the silent lips with one warm human kissB
-
What they are left aloneD
All night with graven stoneD
Pillars and arches that above them meetE
While through those windows highC
The journeying stars can spyC
And dim blue moonbeams drop on their uncovered feetE
-
O cold yet look againF
There is a wandering veinG
Traced in the hand where those white snowdrops lieC
Let her rapt dreamy smileH
The wondering heart beguileH
That almost thinks to hear a calm contented sighC
-
What silence dwells betweenI
Those severed lips sereneI
The rapture of sweet waiting breathes and growsJ
What trance like peace is shedK
On her reclining headK
And e'en on listless feet what languor of reposeJ
-
Angels of joy and loveL
Lean softly from aboveL
And whisper to her sweet and marvellous thingsM
Tell of the golden gateN
That opened wide doth waitN
And shadow her dim sleep with their celestial wingsM
-
Hearing of that blest shoreO
She thinks on earth no moreO
Contented to forego this wintry landP
She has nor thought nor careQ
But to rest calmly thereQ
And hold the snowdrops pale that blossom in her handP
-
But on the other faceR
Broodeth a mournful graceR
This had foreboding thoughts beyond her yearsS
While sinking thus to sleepT
She saw her mother weepT
And could not lift her hand to dry those heart sick tearsU
-
Could not but failing layV
Sighed her young life awayV
And let her arm drop down in listless restW
Too weary on that bedK
To turn her dying headK
Or fold the little sister nearer to her breastW
-
Yet this is faintly toldA
On features fair and coldA
A look of calm surprise of mild regretX
As if with life oppressedW
She turned her to her restW
But felt her mother's love and looked not to forgetX
-
How wistfully they closeY
Sweet eyes to their reposeJ
How quietly declines the placid browZ
The young lips seem to sayV
I have wept much to dayV
And felt some bitter pains but they are over nowZ
-
Sleep there are left belowA2
Many who pine to goA2
Many who lay it to their chastened soulsB2
That gloomy days draw nighC
And they are blest who dieC
For this green world grows worse the longer that she rollsB2
-
And as for me I knowA2
A little of her woeA2
Her yearning want doth in my soul abideC2
And sighs of them that weepT
O put us soon to sleepT
For when we wake with Thee we shall be satisfiedC2
