When The Dusk Comes Down Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDEF GHHGIJJK ELLEMNNM OPPQRSSR TUUTABBA CDEFVWWV

Do you know what I will love best of allA
To do when I'm old At the close of dayB
When the dusk comes down and the shadows playB
And the wind sings loud in the poplars tallA
I will love to get into my corner hereC
The curtains drawn and never a oneD
To break the stillness to sit here aloneE
And dream of these good old times my dearF
-
In fancy you'll come and sit by my sideG
I can see your face with my eyes close shutH
With the pride and the softness clearly cutH
The obstinate chin and the forehead wideG
The oval cheek and the smile so warmI
The dark eyes full of their fun and powerJ
With the tender light for the tender hourJ
And the flash of fire that was half their charmK
-
I'll whisper 'Twas sweet when youth was our ownE
The laughter the nonsense the freedom from careL
The castles we built high up in the airL
The secrets told to each other aloneE
Not all of laughter the world went wrongM
And the shadows pressed till my heart was soreN
I'll never be glad I said any moreN
Never be happy or gay or strongM
-
O the sweetest thing in the hour of painO
Is to have one near us who understandsP
To touch us gently and hold our handsP
Till our strength and courage come back againQ
At love's swift pace you hurried to meR
Your tender words they will ring in my earsS
When I sit and dream after long long yearsS
The shine in your eyes through the mists I'll seeR
-
Our lives will be lying so far apartT
And time no doubt will have given us muchU
Of weary wisdom put many a touchU
Of his withering hand on face and heartT
But I know what I will love best of allA
To do at the end of the busy dayB
When the dusk comes down and the shadows playB
And the wind sings low in the poplars tallA
-
I will love to get into my corner hereC
With the curtains drawn and never a oneD
To break the stillness to sit here aloneE
And dream of these happy days my dearF
And take my treasures from memory's holdV
The tears the laughter the songs that were sungW
O the friends we love when the heart is youngW
Are the friends we love when the heart grows oldV
