The teacher was wise and learned I wisA
All nonsense she held in scorningB
But you never can tell what the primmest missA
Will do of a bright spring morningB
-
What this one did was to spread a snareC
For feet of a youth unheedingB
As March with a meek and lamb like airC
To its very last hour was speedingB
-
Oh he was the dullard of his classD
For how can a youth get learningB
With his eyes aye fixed on a pretty lassD
And his heart aye filled with yearningB
-
Who finds 'mong the rushes which fringe a poolE
She told him the first wind blossomF
May wish what he will poor April foolE
With but one wish in his bosomF
-
Her gray eyes danced on a wild goose chaseG
He'd sally forth on the morrowH
And later she'd laugh in his sombre faceG
And jest at his words of sorrowH
-
But penitence and a troubled mindI
Were fruits of the night's reflectionJ
After all he was simple and strong and kindI
'Twas wrong to flout his affectionJ
-
They met on the hill as she walked to schoolE
He said unheeding her blushesK
Here's the early flower your April foolE
Found growing among the rushesK
-
Take it or leave it as you willL
His voice ringing out so clearlyM
Awoke in her heart a happy thrillL
You know that I love you dearlyM
-
Day dreams indulged as she taught the schoolE
Held lovers kneeling and suingB
Take it or leave it her April foolE
Was masterful in his wooingB
-
He gave her the flower she gave him a kissA
His suit she had long been scorningB
But you never can tell what the primmest missA
Will do of a bright spring morningB
