Illustrious fathers of the human raceA
Of you the song of your afflicted sonsB
Will chant the praise of you more dear by farC
Unto the Great Disposer of the starsD
Who were not born to wretchedness like oursE
Immedicable woes a life of tearsF
The silent tomb eternal night to findG
More sweet by far than the ethereal lightH
These things were not by heaven's gracious lawI
Imposed on you If ancient legends speakJ
Of sins of yours that brought calamityK
Upon the human race and fell diseaseL
Alas the sins more terrible by farC
Committed by your children and their soulsM
More restless and with mad ambition fixedN
Against them roused the wrath of angry godsO
The hand of all sustaining Nature armedP
By them so long neglected and despisedQ
Then life became a burden and a curseR
And every new born babe a thing abhorredS
And hell and chaos reigned upon the earthT
-
Thou first the day and thou the shining lightsU
Of the revolving stars didst see the fieldsV
And their new flocks and herds O leader oldW
And father of the human familyK
The wandering air that o'er the meadows playedX
When smote the rocks and the deserted valesY
The torrent rustling headlong from the AlpsZ
With sound till then unheard and o'er the sitesU
Of future nations noisy cities yet unknownA2
To fame a peace profound mysterious reignedB2
And o'er the unploughed hills in silence roseC2
The ray of Phoebus and the golden moonD2
O world how happy in thy lonelinessE2
Of crimes and of disasters ignorantF2
Oh how much wretchedness Fate had in storeG2
For thy poor race unhappy father whatH2
A series vast of terrible eventsI2
Behold the fields scarce tilled with blood are stainedB2
A brother's blood in sudden frenzy shedJ2
And now alas first hears the gentle airK2
The whirring of the fearful wings of DeathL2
The trembling fratricide a fugitiveM2
The lonely shades avoids in every blastN2
That sweeps the groves a voice of wrath he hearsO2
He the first city builds abode and realmP2
Of wasting cares repentance desperateQ2
Heart sick and groaning thus unites and bindsR2
Together blind and sinful souls and firstS2
A refuge offers unto mutual guiltT2
The wicked hand now scorns the crooked ploughU2
The sweat of honest labor is despisedQ
Now sloth possession of the threshold takesV2
The sluggish frames their native vigor loseW2
The minds in hopeless indolence are sunkX2
And slavery the crowning curse of allY2
Degrades and crushes poor humanityK
-
And thou from heaven's wrath and ocean's wavesZ2
That bellowed round the cloud capped mountain topsA3
The sinful brood didst save thou unto whomB3
From the dark air and wave encumbered hillsC3
The white dove brought the sign of hope renewedD3
And sinking in the west the shipwrecked sunE3
His bright rays darting through the angry cloudsF3
The dark sky painted with the lovely bowU2
The race restored to earth returned begins anewG3
The same career of wickedness and lustH3
With their attendant ills Audacious manI3
Defies the threats of the avenging seaK
And to new shores and to new stars repeatsJ3
The same sad tale of infamy and woeK3
-
And now of thee I think the just and braveL3
The Father of the faithful and the sonsB
Thy honored name that bore Of thee I speakJ
Whom sitting thoughtful in the noontide shadeX
Before thy humble cottage near the banksM3
That gave thy flocks both rest and nourishmentF2
The minds ethereal of celestial guestsN3
With blessings greeted and of thee O sonE3
Of wise Rebecca how at eventideF2
In Aran's valley sweet and by the wellO3
Where happy swains in friendly converse metF2
Thou didst with Laban's daughter fall in loveP3
Love that to exile long and sufferingQ3
And to the odious yoke of servitudeF2
Thy patient soul a willing martyr ledF2
-
Oh surely once for not with idle talesY
And shadows the Aonian song and voiceR3
Of Fame the eager list'ners feed once wasS3
This wretched earth more friendly to our raceA
Was more beloved and dear and golden flewG3
The days that now so laden are with careK2
Not that the milk in waves of purest whiteF2
Gushed from the rocks and flowed along the valesY
Or that the tigers mingled with the sheepT3
To the same fold were led or shepherd boysU3
With playful wolves would frolic at the springQ3
But of its own lot ignorant and allY2
The sufferings that were in store devoidF2
Of care it lived a soft illusive veilV3
Of error hid the stern realitiesL
The cruel laws of heaven and of fateF2
Life glided on with cheerful hope contentF2
And tranquil sought the haven of its restF2
-
So lives in California's forests vastF2
A happy race whose life blood is not drainedF2
By pallid care whose limbs are not by fierceW3
Disease consumed the woods their food their homesX3
The hollow rock the streamlet of the valeV3
Its waters furnishes and unforeseenY3
Dark death upon them steals Ah how unarmedF2
Wise Nature's happy votaries are yeK
Against our impious audacityK
Our fierce indomitable love of gainZ3
Your shores your caves your quiet woods invadesA4
Your minds corrupts your bodies enervatesA4
And happiness a naked fugitiveM2
Before it drives to earth's remotest boundsA4
