Winter on the mountainsA
Summer on the shoreB
The robes of sun gleams wovenC
The lake's blue wavelets woreB
-
Cold white against the heavensA
Flashed winter's crown of snowD
And the blossoms of the spring tideE
Waved brightly far belowD
-
The mountain's head was drearyF
The cold and cloud were thereG
But the mountain's feet were sandaledE
With flowers of beauty rareG
-
And winding thro' the mountainsA
The lake's calm wavelets rolledE
And a cloudless sun was gildingH
Their ripples with its goldE
-
Adown the lake we glidedE
Thro' all the sunlit dayE
The cold snows gleamed above usI
But fair flowers fringed our wayE
-
The snows crept down the mountainC
The flowers crept up the slopeJ
Till they seemed to meet and mingleK
Like human fear and hopeJ
-
But the same rich golden sunlightE
Fell on the flowers and snowD
Like the smile of God that flashesL
On hearts in joy or woeD
-
And on the lake's low marginC
The trees wore stoles of greenM
While here and there amid themN
A convent cross was seenM
-
Anon a ruined castleK
Moss mantled loomed in viewO
And cast its solemn shadowD
Across the water's blueO
-
And chapel cot and villaP
Met here and there our gazeQ
And many a crumbling towerR
That told of other daysQ
-
And scattered o'er the watersS
The fishing boats lay stillT
And sound of song so softlyF
Came echoed from the hillT
-
At times the mountain's shadowD
Fell dark across the sceneM
And veiled with veil of purpleK
The wavelets' silver sheenM
-
But for a moment onlyF
The lake would wind and loD
The waves would near the gloryF
Of the sunlight's brightest glowD
-
At times there fell a silenceU
Unbroken by a toneV
As if no sound of voicesW
Had ever there been knownV
-
Through strange and lonely placesW
We glided thus for hoursS
We saw no other facesW
But the faces of the flowersS
-
The shores were sad and lonelyF
As hearts without a loveX
While darker and more drearyF
The mountains rose aboveX
-
But sudden round a headlandD
The lake would sweep againY
And voices from a villageZ
Would meet us with their strainA2
-
Thus all the day we glidedD
Until the Vesper bellB2
Gave to the day at sunsetD
Its sweet and soft farewellB2
-
Then back again we glidedD
Upon our homeward wayE
When twilight wrapped the watersS
And the mountains with its grayE
-
But brief the reign of twilightD
The night came quickly onC2
The dark brow o'er the mountainsA
Star wreathed brightly shoneV
-
And down thro' all the shadowsD2
The star gleams softly creptD
And kissed with lips all shiningH
The wavelets ere they sleptD
-
The lake lay in a slumberR
The shadows for its screenM
While silence waved her sceptreR
Above the sleeping sceneM
-
The spirit of the darknessI
Moved ghost like everywhereG
Wherever starlight glimmeredD
Its shadow sure fell thereG
-
The lone place grew more lonelyF
And all along our wayE
The mysteries of the night timeE2
Held undisputed swayE
-
Thro' silence and thro' darknessI
We glided down the tideD
That wound around the mountainsA
That rose on either sideD
-
No eyes would close in slumberR
Within our little barkF2
What charmed us so in daylightD
So awed us in the darkF2
-
Upon the deck we lingeredD
A whisper scarce was heardD
When hearts are stirred profoundestD
Lips are without a wordD
-
Let's say the Chaplet softlyF
A voice beside me spakeG2
Christ walked once in the darknessI
Across an Eastern lakeG2
-
And to night we know the secretD
That will charm Him to our sideD
If we call upon His MotherR
He will meet us on the tideD
-
So we said the beads togetherR
Up and down the little barkF2
And I believe that Jesus met usI
With His Mother in the darkF2
-
And our prayers were scarcely endedD
When on mountain top afarH2
We beheld the morning meetingH
With the night's last fading starH2
-
And I left the lake but neverR
Shall the years to come effaceI2
From my heart the dream and visionC
Of that strange and lonely placeI2
-
-
FebruaryF
