Winter on the mountains	A
Summer on the shore	B
The robes of sun gleams woven	C
The lake's blue wavelets wore	B

Cold white against the heavens	A
Flashed winter's crown of snow	D
And the blossoms of the spring tide	E
Waved brightly far below	D
	-
The mountain's head was dreary	F
The cold and cloud were there	G
But the mountain's feet were sandaled	E
With flowers of beauty rare	G
	-
And winding thro' the mountains	A
The lake's calm wavelets rolled	E
And a cloudless sun was gilding	H
Their ripples with its gold	E
	-
Adown the lake we glided	E
Thro' all the sunlit day	E
The cold snows gleamed above us	I
But fair flowers fringed our way	E
	-
The snows crept down the mountain	C
The flowers crept up the slope	J
Till they seemed to meet and mingle	K
Like human fear and hope	J
	-
But the same rich golden sunlight	E
Fell on the flowers and snow	D
Like the smile of God that flashes	L
On hearts in joy or woe	D
	-
And on the lake's low margin	C
The trees wore stoles of green	M
While here and there amid them	N
A convent cross was seen	M
	-
Anon a ruined castle	K
Moss mantled loomed in view	O
And cast its solemn shadow	D
Across the water's blue	O
	-
And chapel cot and villa	P
Met here and there our gaze	Q
And many a crumbling tower	R
That told of other days	Q
	-
And scattered o'er the waters	S
The fishing boats lay still	T
And sound of song so softly	F
Came echoed from the hill	T
	-
At times the mountain's shadow	D
Fell dark across the scene	M
And veiled with veil of purple	K
The wavelets' silver sheen	M
	-
But for a moment only	F
The lake would wind and lo	D
The waves would near the glory	F
Of the sunlight's brightest glow	D
	-
At times there fell a silence	U
Unbroken by a tone	V
As if no sound of voices	W
Had ever there been known	V
	-
Through strange and lonely places	W
We glided thus for hours	S
We saw no other faces	W
But the faces of the flowers	S
	-
The shores were sad and lonely	F
As hearts without a love	X
While darker and more dreary	F
The mountains rose above	X
	-
But sudden round a headland	D
The lake would sweep again	Y
And voices from a village	Z
Would meet us with their strain	A2
	-
Thus all the day we glided	D
Until the Vesper bell	B2
Gave to the day at sunset	D
Its sweet and soft farewell	B2
	-
Then back again we glided	D
Upon our homeward way	E
When twilight wrapped the waters	S
And the mountains with its gray	E
	-
But brief the reign of twilight	D
The night came quickly on	C2
The dark brow o'er the mountains	A
Star wreathed brightly shone	V
	-
And down thro' all the shadows	D2
The star gleams softly crept	D
And kissed with lips all shining	H
The wavelets ere they slept	D
	-
The lake lay in a slumber	R
The shadows for its screen	M
While silence waved her sceptre	R
Above the sleeping scene	M
	-
The spirit of the darkness	I
Moved ghost like everywhere	G
Wherever starlight glimmered	D
Its shadow sure fell there	G

The lone place grew more lonely	F
And all along our way	E
The mysteries of the night time	E2
Held undisputed sway	E
	-
Thro' silence and thro' darkness	I
We glided down the tide	D
That wound around the mountains	A
That rose on either side	D
	-
No eyes would close in slumber	R
Within our little bark	F2
What charmed us so in daylight	D
So awed us in the dark	F2
	-
Upon the deck we lingered	D
A whisper scarce was heard	D
When hearts are stirred profoundest	D
Lips are without a word	D

Let's say the Chaplet softly	F
A voice beside me spake	G2
Christ walked once in the darkness	I
Across an Eastern lake	G2
	-
And to night we know the secret	D
That will charm Him to our side	D
If we call upon His Mother	R
He will meet us on the tide	D
	-
So we said the beads together	R
Up and down the little bark	F2
And I believe that Jesus met us	I
With His Mother in the dark	F2
	-
And our prayers were scarcely ended	D
When on mountain top afar	H2
We beheld the morning meeting	H
With the night's last fading star	H2
	-
And I left the lake but never	R
Shall the years to come efface	I2
From my heart the dream and vision	C
Of that strange and lonely place	I2
