Who can forget fair freedom's birdA
That has her genuine praises heardA
Confirm'd by frequent proofB
The patriot stork is sure to shareC
The brave Batavian's generous careC
While breeding on his roofB
-
In all her early brightest daysD
When Holland won immortal praiseD
Her Spanish tyrant's dreadE
She play'd not her heroic partF
With spirit nobler than the heartF
Of one mild bird she bredE
-
It was a female Stork whose mindG
Shew'd all the mother bravely kindG
In trial's fiercest hourH
This bird had blest her happy lotI
High nested on a fisher's cotI
As stedfast as a towerH
-
Her host a man benignly mildJ
Was happy in a darling childJ
Who now had woman's airC
Her face intelligent and sweetK
And her soft bosom was the seatK
Of kind courageous careC
-
The lovely girl was call'd CatauK
She joy'd to make her neat hearth glowL
For her returning sireH
When from his distant toil he hiedK
To banquet by his daughter's sideK
Before his evening fireH
-
The child and parent liv'd aloneM
Each to the other long had shewnM
Such pure and perfect loveN
Comrades they wanted none besideK
Both cherishing with tender prideK
Their Stork who built aboveN
-
To their high chimney's top she sprungO
Protecting there three callow youngO
Too feeble to descendK
But oft she visited the groundK
And in her youthful hostess foundK
A playmate and a friendK
-
In scenes of social care endear'dK
As sure as supper time appear'dK
The Stork a ready guestK
Was constant at the damsel's sideK
And she with dainties was suppliedK
To carry to her nestK
-
But how among the dearest broodK
Calamity will oft intrudeK
And fairest hopes preventK
How quick can desolation's stormP
With horrid agonies deformP
The scene of sweet contentK
-
As early one autumnal eveQ
Catau was eager to receiveQ
Her father to his feastK
She look'd without her door and sawR
Aloft a little blaze of strawR
That in the wind encreas'dK
-
Alas from her high chimney's topS
A dangerous spark had chanc'd to dropS
And fir'd the fav'rite nestK
She sees the affrighted parent flyT
Around her young and seem to cryT
Oh succour the distrestK
-
Catau was an heroic maidK
Most apt to lend a sufferer aidK
With quick ey'd zeal she foundK
A ladder and a triple forkU
On which to lift each callow StorkU
And guide them to the groundK
-
With pity's just and dauntless hasteK
She mounts the ladder rightly plac'dK
She rears the guardian forkU
Her heart expands with hope elateK
That she shall kindly snatch from fateK
Each tender little StorkU
-
Dear virtuous damsel vainly braveV
Thou must resign thy hopes to saveV
These innocents from deathW
The faithless ladder breaks the maidK
Escaping by angelic aidK
Now scarce retains her breathW
-
Forgetting selfish fear her eyeT
Is fixt upon the scene on highT
With anguish and despairC
The dauntless bird with wond'rous skillX
A parent's duty to fulfilX
Toils in the troubled airC
-
Two of the callow young she laysD
Beyond the peril of the blazeD
But while the last she rearsY
The other little ones distrestK
Crawl back within the burning nestK
And aggravate her fearsY
-
Now in the vex'd and heated airC
She draws fresh courage from despairC
She sees them gasp for breathW
Tho' fiercer flames around her sprungO
She settles on her dying youngO
And welcomes social deathW
-
My glorious bird exclaims the maidK
Who her brave fav'rite survey'dK
While she expir'd aboveN
I will not at thy lot repineM
But rather pray it may be mineM
To die with those I loveN
