Let the foul Scene proceedA
There's laughter in the wingsB
'Tis sawdust that they bleedA
But a box Death bringsB
-
How rare a skill is theirsC
These extreme pangs to showD
How real a frenzy wearsC
Each feigner of woeD
-
Gigantic dins upriseE
Even the gods must feelF
A smarting of the eyesE
As these fumes upswealF
-
Strange such a Piece is freeG
While we Spectators sitH
Aghast at its agonyG
Yet absorbed in itH
-
Dark is the outer airI
Cold the night draughts blowF
Mutely we stare and stareI
At the frenzied ShowF
-
Yet heaven hath its quiet shroudJ
Of deep immutable blueF
We cry An end We are bowedJ
By the dread 'Tis trueF
-
While the Shape who hoofs applauseK
Behind our deafened earL
Hoots angel wise the CauseM
And affright even fearN
