Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDF GHGI GJGK LHMN OPOQ GRGS

We made all possible preparationsA
Drew up a list of firmsB
Constantly revised our calculationsA
And allotted the farmsC
-
Issued all the orders expedientD
In this kind of caseE
Most as was expectd were obedientD
Though there were murmurs of courseF
-
Chiefly against our exercisingG
Our old right to abuseH
Even some sort of attempt at risingG
But these were mere boysI
-
For never serious misgivingG
Occurred to anyoneJ
Since there could be no question of livingG
If we did not winK
-
The generally accepted view teachesL
That there was no excuseH
Though in the light of recent researchesM
Many would find the causeN
-
In a not uncommon form of terrorO
Others still more astuteP
Point to possibilities of errorO
At the very startQ
-
As for ourselves there is left remainingG
Our honour at leastR
And a reasonable chance of retainingG
Our faculties to the lastS
