Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFG HIJI AKLKMNON

The mouse that gnawed the oak tree downA
Began his task in early lifeB
He kept so busy with his teethC
He had no time to take a wifeB
-
He gnawed and gnawed through sun and rainD
When the ambitious fit was onE
Then rested in the sawdust tillF
A month of idleness had goneG
-
He did not move about to huntH
The coteries of mousie menI
He was a snail paced stupid thingJ
Until he cared to gnaw againI
-
The mouse that gnawed the oak tree downA
When that tough foe was at his feetK
Found in the stump no angel cakeL
Nor buttered bread nor cheese nor meatK
The forest roof let in the skyM
This light is worth the work said heN
I'll make this ancient swamp more lightO
And started on another treeN
