Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCEFGF DHIHJKIK LMNMOPQPRLSLTUVUWXYZ A2MB2MA2C2D2C2

During an anti saloon campaign in central IllinoisA
-
-
In the midst of the battle I turnedB
For the thunders could flourish without meC
And hid by a rose hung wallD
Forgetting the murder about meC
And wrote from my wound on the stoneE
In mirth half prayer half playF
Send me a picture bookG
Send me a song to dayF
-
I saw him there by the wallD
When I scarce had written the lineH
In the enemy's colors dressedI
And the serpent standard of wineH
Writhing its withered lengthJ
From his ghostly hands o'er the groundK
And there by his shadowy breastI
The glorious poem I foundK
-
This was his world old cryL
Thus read the famous prayerM
Wine wine wine and flowersN
And cup bearers always fairM
'Twas a book of the snares of earthO
Bordered in gold and blueP
And I read each line to the windQ
And read to the roses tooP
And they nodded their womanly headsR
And told to the wall just whyL
For wine of the earth men bleedS
Kingdoms and empires dieL
I envied the grape stained sageT
The roses were praising himU
The ways of the world seemed goodV
And the glory of heaven dimU
I envied the endless kingsW
Who found great pearls in the mireX
Who bought with the nation's lifeY
The cup of delicious fireZ
-
But the wine of God came downA2
And I drank it out of the airM
Fair is the serpent cupB2
But the cup of God more fairM
The wine of God came downA2
That makes no drinker to weepC2
And I went back to battle againD2
Leaving the singer asleepC2
