Brown earth sun soakedA
Beneath his headB
And over the quiet limbsC
Through time unreckonedB
Lay this brown earth for him Now is he comeD
Truly he hath a sweet bedB
-
The perfume shedB
From invisible gardens is chaliced by kindly airsE
And carried for welcome to the strangerF
Long seasons ere he came this wildernessG
They habitedB
-
They and the mist of starsH
Down spreadB
About him as a hush of vespering birdsI
They and the sun the moonJ
Naught now denies him the moon's comingK
Nor the morning trail of goldB
The luminous print of evening redB
At the sun's treadB
-
The brown earth holds himL
The stars and little winds the friendly moonJ
And sun attend in turn his restB
They linger above him softly moving They are graciousG
And gently wise as though remembering how his hungerF
His kinship knew them once but blindlyM
In thoughts unsaidB
As a dream that fledB
-
So is he theirs assuredly as the seasonsN
So is his sleep by them for ever companionedB
And perchance by the voices of bright children playingK
And knowing not by the echo of young laughterF
When their dancing is spedB
-
Truly he hath a sweet bedB
