Has sorrow thy young days shadedA
As clouds o'er the morning fleetB
Too fast have those young days fadedC
That even in sorrow were sweetB
Does Time with his cold wing witherD
Each feeling that once was dearE
Then child of misfortune come hitherD
I'll weep with thee tear for tearF
-
Has love to that soul so tenderD
Been like our Lagenian mineG
Where sparkles of golden splendourD
All over the surface shineG
But if in pursuit we go deeperD
Allured by the gleam that shoneH
Ah false as the dream of the sleeperD
Like Love the bright ore is goneI
-
Has Hope like the bird in the storyD
That flitted from tree to treeD
With the talisman's glittering gloryD
Has Hope been that bird to theeD
On branch after branch alightingJ
The gem did she still displayK
And when nearest and most invitingJ
Then waft the fair gem awayK
-
If thus the young hours have fleetedB
When sorrow itself look'd brightB
If thus the fair hope hath cheatedB
That led thee along so lightB
If thus the cold world now witherD
Each feeling that once was dearD
Come child of misfortune come hitherD
I'll weep with thee tear for tearD
