Fill the bumper fairA
Every drop we sprinkleB
O'er the brow of CareA
Smooths away a wrinkleB
Wit's electric flameC
Ne'er so swiftly passesD
As when through the frameC
It shoots from brimming glassesD
Fill the bumper fairA
Every drop we sprinkleB
O'er the brow of CareA
Smooths away a wrinkleB
-
Sages can they sayE
Grasp the lightning's pinionsE
And bring down its rayE
From the starr'd dominionsE
So we Sages sitF
And 'mid bumpers brighteningG
From the Heaven of WitF
Draw down all its lightningG
Fill the bumper etcH
-
Wouldst thou know what firstI
Made our souls inheritJ
This ennobling thirstI
For wine's celestial spiritJ
It chanced upon that dayE
When as bards inform usE
Prometheus stole awayE
The living fires that warm usE
Fill the bumper etcH
-
The careless Youth when upK
To Glory's fount aspiringG
Took nor urn nor cupK
To hide the pilfer'd fire inL
But oh his joy when roundM
The halls of heaven spyingG
Among the stars he foundM
The bowl of Bacchus lyingG
Fill the bumper etcH
-
Some drops were in that bowlN
Remains of last night's pleasureO
With which the Sparks of SoulN
Mix'd their burning treasureO
Hence the goblet's showerO
Hath such spells to win usE
Hence its mighty powerO
O'er that flame within usE
Fill the bumper fairA
Every drop we sprinkleB
O'er the brow of CareA
Smooths away a wrinkleB
