Announcement Of A New Thalaba. Addressed To Robert Southey, Esq Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCCCCDDEEFFGGHFF FIIFFIIJKK LLCCMMNNOOPPPPQQ RRSSEETTT

When erst my Southey thy tuneful tongueA
The terrible tale of Thalaba sungA
Of him the Destroyer doomed to routB
That grim divan of conjurors outB
Whose dwelling dark as legends sayC
Beneath the roots of the ocean layC
Fit place for deep ones such as theyC
How little thou knewest dear Dr SoutheyC
Altho' bright genius all allow theeC
That some years thence thy wondering eyesD
Should see a second Thalaba riseD
As ripe for ruinous rigs as thineE
Tho' his havoc lie in a different lineE
And should find this new improved DestroyerF
Beneath the wig of a Yankee lawyerF
A sort of an alien alias manG
Whose country or party guess who canG
Being Cockney half half JonathanH
And his life to make the thing completerF
Being all in the genuine Thalaba metreF
Loose and irregular as thy feet areF
First into Whig Pindarics ramblingI
Then in low Tory doggrel scramblingI
Now love his theme now Church his gloryF
At once both Tory and ama toryF
Now in the Old Bailey lay meanderingI
Now in soft couplet style philanderingI
And lastly in lame AlexandrineJ
Dragging his wounded length alongK
When scourged by Holland's silken thongK
-
In short dear Bob Destroyer the SecondL
May fairly a match for the First be reckonedL
Save that your Thalaba's talent layC
In sweeping old conjurors clean awayC
While ours at aldermen deals his blowsM
Who no great conjurors are God knowsM
Lays Corporations by wholesale levelN
Sends Acts of Parliament to the devilN
Bullies the whole Milesian raceO
Seven millions of Paddies face to faceO
And seizing that magic wand himselfP
Which erst thy conjurors left on the shelfP
Transforms the boys of the Boyne and LiffeyP
All into foreigners in a jiffyP
Aliens outcasts every soul of 'emQ
Born but for whips and chains the whole of 'emQ
-
Never in short did parallelR
Betwixt two heroes gee so wellR
And among the points in which they fitS
There's one dear Bob I can't omitS
That hacking hectoring blade of thineE
Dealt much in the Domdaniel lineE
And 'tis but rendering justice dueT
To say that ours and his Tory crewT
Damn Daniel most devoutly tooT
