Deeply morbid deeply morbid was the girl who typed the lettersA
Always out of office hours running with her social bettersA
But when daylight and the darkness of the office closed about herB
Not for this ah not for this her office colleagues came to doubt herB
It was that look within her eyeC
Why did it always seem to say goodbyeC
-
Joan her name was and at lunchtimeD
Solitary solitaryE
She would go and watch the pictures In the National GalleryE
All alone all aloneF
This time with no friend beside herB
She would go and watch the picturesA
All aloneF
-
Will she leave her office colleaguesG
Will she leave her evening pleasuresA
Toil within a friendly bureauH
Running later in her leisureB
All alone all aloneF
Before the pictures she seemed turned to stoneF
-
Close upon the Turner picturesA
Closer than a thought may goH
Hangs her eye and all the coloursA
Leap into a special glowH
All for her all aloneF
All for her all for JoanF
-
First the canvas where the oceanI
Like a mighty animalJ
With a wicked motionI
Leaps for sailors' funeralJ
-
Holds her painting Oh the creatureB
Oh the wicked virile thingK
With its skin of fleck and shadowH
Stretching tightening over himL
Wild yet caputured wild yet caputuredH
By the painter Joan is quite enrapturedH
-
Now she edges from the canvasA
To another loved more dearlyE
Where the awful light of purestH
Sunshine falls across the sprayM
There the burning coasts of fancyE
Open to her pleasure layM
All alone all aloneF
Come away come awayM
All aloneF
-
Lady Mary Lady KittyE
The Honourable FeatherstonehaughN
Polly Tommy from the officeA
Which of these shall hold her nowO
Come away come awayM
All aloneF
-
The spray reached out and sucked her inP
It was hardly a noticed thingK
That Joan was there and is not nowO
Oh go and tell young FeatherstonehaughN
Gone away gone awayM
All aloneF
-
She stood up straightH
The sun fell downQ
There was no more of London TownQ
She went upon the painted shoreR
And there she walks for ever moreR
Happy quiteH
Beaming brightH
In a happy happy lightH
All aloneF
-
They say she was a morbid girl no doubt of itH
And what befell her clearly grew out of itH
But I say she's a lucky oneI
To walk for ever in that sunI
And as I bless sweet Turner's nameS
I wish that I could do the sameS
