| - | |
| Across the distance I can see the bushes | E |
| Behind them I used to squat and relieve myself | F |
| Above them I see the roof tops | G |
| They are the convenience stores I used to patronize | H |
| I have to get there I know I have to | B |
| To see if there are faces I remember | D |
| The old faces I used to know | I |
| - | |
| I walk down the familiar dusty path | J |
| Memories of good days and bad days engulf my imagination | K |
| This is home to me this is where I belong | L |
| I can't wait to see my momma | M |
| My children my wife the distance feels too far | N |
| I can feel tears of happiness swell in my eyes | H |

| To the happiest moment of my life | P |
| - | |
| Step by step I walk the distance | Q |
| I see people that I know they don't remember me | R |
| Most of cause can't believe it's me | R |
| I just bow my heard in respect I walk on | S |
| I reach the shopping center where | T |
| I used to hang out with my folks | U |
| Half of them consumed by AIDS and poverty | R |
| I avoid stopping by I don't want to take away | V |
| The energy for my happy moment | B |
| I tread on inside my heart throbs searching for freedom | W |
| - | |
| This place hasn't changed a little bit I am thinking | X |
| Nothing new has been built | B |
| Still the old buildings getting older | D |
| And the poor people getting poorer | D |
| This is my home where my heart dies to be | R |
| - | |
| Across the valley stands my school | Y |
| My Alma mater where my children go | I |
| It was blue when I left can't tell what color it is now | Z |
| Maybe a pale shade of blue beat up | A2 |
| Four years of sun rain and wind | B |
| I wander that s where I built my dreams | B2 |
| And I have chased after them ever since | C2 |
| I also think of my brothers long gone | D2 |
| With whom I shared dreams and a conviction to break out | B |
| Shingi Andrew Charles Albert Gordy and Johnny | R |
| My heart aches for them | E2 |
| - | |
| But I walk on past the grass thatched huts | F2 |
| I have seen them since time immemorial | G2 |
| Smoke still trickles from the blackening grass roof tops | G |
| At least there still is life I am thinking | X |
| Children dot in and out of those dark rooms playfully | R |
| At least they still make them I tell myself | F |
| Our kind will live on we will survive | H2 |
| - | |
| As I emerge from this last village | I2 |
| I see my homestead peeping through those | J2 |
| Large wild blackberry trees | K2 |

| - | |
| Indeed it's the same place I was a few years back | M2 |
| It's the same place missing so many of the people I knew | B |
| Many so close to my heart I want to cry for them | E2 |
| My hands are empty no big bags no suitcases | N2 |
| I clutch to my three teddy bears | O2 |
| They are for my three girls that is as heavy as can be | R |
| For my boys it s my heart that I hold for them | E2 |
| For I want them to be men more than I have been | P2 |
| - | |
| Like the biblical prodigal son I stumble | G2 |
| But I won t fall I soldier on no one is expecting me | R |
| That's where my joy is I hold back my tears | O2 |
| Because I am gonna see so much flow | I |
| Tears of joy tears of happiness | A |
| - | |
| I cross that small stream Chinyani | P2 |
| Still flowing some clear water | D |
| It's been a long time since I took my first swim | Q2 |
| In the ponds upstream the same ponds we fished | B |
| Those tiny fish we roasted as we herded cattle | G2 |
| I used to wait for my wife then my school age sweetheart | B |
| We never dreamt then that we would be a family | R |
| Sitting on those soggy banks | R2 |
| I would throw stones in the water watching those | J2 |
| Circular waves grow until they fade | B |
| I can't remember what went through my mind | B |
| But I know I would carry her books | S2 |
| Rock with her to within a hundred feet of her house | T2 |
| For her mother gave 'a don't mess with me stare' | D |
| That was love so innocent but so great | B |
| - | |
| As I get close to my village | I2 |
| People walk about they stop to watch | U2 |
| Probably wondering who the hell I am | V2 |
| However they go about their business | A |
| I drift closer to my homestead | B |
| I see my mother stop and watch | U2 |

| The one that dislocated her hip as she gave birth no | P2 |

| He never called they seem to be saying | X |
| The group has grown to more than ten | P2 |
| I know every one of them everyone is grown | P2 |
| But from that distance I can name all of them | V2 |
| They love me so much I know that as soon as they realize | W2 |
| They are gonna break their legs trying to outrun one another | D |
| - | |
| I keep my cool I keep walking | X |
| I slow down I am crying I am so happy | R |
| Suddenly my mother takes off running towards me | R |
| I know she is crying already she gave me those tears too | B |
| My father my father is back I know she is saying | X |
| Everybody else just stands there | D |
| They think the old lady's gone crazy | R |
| She keeps running stumbling almost falling | X |
| I wouldn't imagine my mom running that good she has a slight limp | X2 |
| I take off on a sprint opening my arms like I am gonna fly | O |
| Then only does everyone run after her | D |
| They overtake her but she doesn't stop | Y2 |
| I brace for a knock down when | P2 |
| That whirlwind gets in contact with me | R |
| I am so happy I can't run no more | D |
| I go down on my knees as every one of them dives for me | R |
| They knock me down as they pile up on me | R |
| I am laughing my lungs out | B |
| I stand up shrugging everyone off | Z2 |
| To catch my mother before she falls | W2 |
| I hug her as she goes down to her knees | W2 |
| Saying her prayers aloud | B |
| You are back daddy you are back she says | W2 |
| As streams of tears run down that wrinkled face | W2 |
| My children cling on me like I could bolt away | V |
| I surprised you ha I say | V |
| That s the day in my dreams just a dream | V2 |
