Africanis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEF GHIJKL AMMNOP QRSTUV

Born and bred in Africa it is the African dogA
Strong loyal and dependable an African prideB
Yes he survived the wars the droughts the epidemicsC
By his master s side he has enjoyed the left overs the bare bonesD
Still he stands guard on the doors the kraal gatesE
Hoping that someday he will have his plate at the tableF
-
The master calls him names of the things he dreams upG
Of people he hates and their whole clans of witches and wizardsH
He guards the African wealth through the dark nightsI
And patrols the empty homesteads while his owners toil the fieldsJ
Still he can t enjoy the warmth of the winter firesK
Because his place is the forsaken space out of the doorL
-
He can t be a purebred dog just a dogA
A colonial paradigm that foreign is betterM
Looked down upon by its very African ownerM
Who lets him feed on the fecal remains of everyoneN
But shuns its pure love and ignores its deep loyaltyO
Salute to the African hunter and guardP
-
When I look into his eyesQ
I can feel the penetration of his yearningR
For love and a pat that says I love you tooS
He waits and waits to hear the words never saidT
But his solace is always the feeling of homeU
The place that his soul guards with a barkV
