Young Fellow My Lad Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACAC ADADACAC ABABEDED ABABFGFG AHAIAJKJALMLNONO

Where are you going Young Fellow My LadA
On this glittering morn of MayB
I'm going to join the Colours DadA
They're looking for men they sayB
But you're only a boy Young Fellow My LadA
You aren't obliged to goC
I'm seventeen and a quarter DadA
And ever so strong you knowC
-
-
-
So you're off to France Young Fellow My LadA
And you're looking so fit and brightD
I'm terribly sorry to leave you DadA
But I feel that I'm doing rightD
God bless you and keep you Young Fellow My LadA
You're all of my life you knowC
Don't worry I'll soon be back dear DadA
And I'm awfully proud to goC
-
-
-
Why don't you write Young Fellow My LadA
I watch for the post each dayB
And I miss you so and I'm awfully sadA
And it's months since you went awayB
And I've had the fire in the parlour litE
And I'm keeping it burning brightD
Till my boy comes home and here I sitE
Into the quiet nightD
-
-
-
What is the matter Young Fellow My LadA
No letter again to dayB
Why did the postman look so sadA
And sigh as he turned awayB
I hear them tell that we've gained new groundF
But a terrible price we've paidG
God grant my boy that you're safe and soundF
But oh I'm afraid afraidG
-
-
-
They've told me the truth Young Fellow My LadA
You'll never come back againH
Oh God the dreams and the dreams I've hadA
and the hopes I've nursed in vainI
For you passed in the night Young Fellow My LadA
And you proved in the cruel testJ
Of the screaming shell and the battle hellK
That my boy was one of the bestJ
So you'll live you'll live Young Fellow My LadA
In the gleam of the evening starL
In the wood note wild and the laugh of the childM
In all sweet things that areL
And you'll never die my wonderful boyN
While life is noble and trueO
For all our beauty and hope and joyN
We will owe to our lads like youO
