Work Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJEKEK

When twenty one I loved to dreamA
And was to loafing well inclinedB
Somehow I couldn't get up steamA
To welcome work of any kindB
While students burned the midnight lampC
With dour ambition as their goadD
I longed to be a gayful trampC
And greet adventure on the roadD
-
But now that sixty years have spedE
Behold I toil from morn to nightF
The thoughts that teem into my headE
I pray God give me time to writeF
With eager and unflagging penG
No drudgery of desk I shirkH
And preach to all retiring menG
The gospel of unceasing workH
-
And yet I do not sadly grieveI
Such squandering of golden daysJ
For from my dreaming I believeI
Have stemmed my least unworthy laysJ
Aye toil is best when all is saidE
As age has made me understandK
So fitly fold when I am deadE
A pencil in my handK
