Winnie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHBHB IJIJKFKF LB L BIMIM

When I went by the meadow gateA
The chestnut mare would trot to meet meB
And as her coming I would waitA
She'd whinney high as if to greet meB
And I would kiss her silky noseC
And stroke her neck until it glistenedD
And speak soft words I don't supposeC
She understand but how she listenedD
-
Then in the war net I was caughtE
Returning three black winters olderF
And when the little mare I soughtG
The farmer told me he had sold herF
And so time passed when in the streetH
One day I heard a plaintive whinneyB
That roused a recollection sweetH
So then I turned and there was WinnieB
-
I vow she knew me mooning thereI
She raised her nose for me to fondleJ
And though I'd lost an arm I'll swearI
She kissed the empty sleeve a dangleJ
But oh it cut me to the heartK
Though I was awful glad to meet herF
For lo she dragged a tinker's cartK
And stumbled weakly as he beat herF
-
Just skin and bone a sorry hackL
Say fellow you may think it funnyB
-
I made a deal and bought her backL
-
Though it took all my bonus moneyB
And she'll be in the meadow thereI
As long as I have dough for spendingM
Gee I'll take care of that old mareI
Sweetheart you'll have a happy endingM
