Winnie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHBHB IJIJKFKF LB L BIMIM| When I went by the meadow gate | A |
| The chestnut mare would trot to meet me | B |
| And as her coming I would wait | A |
| She'd whinney high as if to greet me | B |
| And I would kiss her silky nose | C |
| And stroke her neck until it glistened | D |
| And speak soft words I don't suppose | C |
| She understand but how she listened | D |
| - | |
| Then in the war net I was caught | E |
| Returning three black winters older | F |
| And when the little mare I sought | G |
| The farmer told me he had sold her | F |
| And so time passed when in the street | H |
| One day I heard a plaintive whinney | B |
| That roused a recollection sweet | H |
| So then I turned and there was Winnie | B |
| - | |
| I vow she knew me mooning there | I |
| She raised her nose for me to fondle | J |
| And though I'd lost an arm I'll swear | I |
| She kissed the empty sleeve a dangle | J |
| But oh it cut me to the heart | K |
| Though I was awful glad to meet her | F |
| For lo she dragged a tinker's cart | K |
| And stumbled weakly as he beat her | F |
| - | |
| Just skin and bone a sorry hack | L |
| Say fellow you may think it funny | B |
| - | |
| I made a deal and bought her back | L |
| - | |
| Though it took all my bonus money | B |
| And she'll be in the meadow there | I |
| As long as I have dough for spending | M |
| Gee I'll take care of that old mare | I |
| Sweetheart you'll have a happy ending | M |
