The Wanderlust has lured me to the seven lonely seasA
Has dumped me on the tailing piles of dearthB
The Wanderlust has haled me from the morris chairs of easeA
Has hurled me to the ends of all the earthB
How bitterly I've cursed it oh the Painted Desert knowsC
The wraithlike heights that hug the pallid plainD
The all but fluid silence yet the longing grows and growsC
And I've got to glut the Wanderlust againE
-
Soldier sailor in what a plight I've beenF
Tinker tailor oh what a sight I've seenG
And I'm hitting the trail in the morning boysH
And you won't see my heels for dustI
For it's all day with youJ
When you answer the cueJ
Of the Wan der lustI
-
The Wanderlust has got me by the belly aching fireK
By the fever and the freezing and the painD
By the darkness that just drowns you by the wail of home desireK
I've tried to break the spell of it in vainD
Life might have been a feast for me now there are only crumbsL
In rags and tatters beggar wise I sitM
Yet there's no rest or peace for me imperious it drumsL
The Wanderlust and I must follow itM
-
Highway by way many a mile I've doneN
Rare way fair way many a height I've wonN
But I'm pulling my freight in the morning boysH
And it's over the hills or bustI
For there's never a cureO
When you list to the lureO
Of the Wan der lustI
-
The Wanderlust has taught me it has whispered to my heartP
Things all you stay at homes will never knowQ
The white man and the savage are but three short days apartP
Three days of cursing crawling doubt and woeQ
Then it's down to chewing muclucs to the water you can eatR
To fish you bolt with nose held in your handS
When you get right down to cases it's King's Grub that rules the racesT
And the Wanderlust will help you understandS
-
Haunting taunting that is the spell of itM
Mocking baulking that is the hell of itM
But I'll shoulder my pack in the morning boysH
And I'm going because I mustI
For it's so long to allU
When you answer the callU
Of the Wan der lustI
-
The Wanderlust has blest me in a ragged blanket curledV
I've watched the gulf of Heaven foam with starsW
I've walked with eyes wide open to the wonder of the worldV
I've seen God's flood of glory burst its barsW
I've seen the gold a blinding in the riffles of the skyX
Till I fancied me a bloated plutocratY
But I'm freedom's happy bond slave and I will be till I dieX
And I've got to thank the Wanderlust for thatY
-
Wild heart child heart all of the world your homeZ
Glad heart mad heart what can you do but roamZ
Oh I'll beat it once more in the morning boysH
With a pinch of tea and a crustI
For you cannot denyX
When you hark to the cryX
Of the Wan der lustI
-
The Wanderlust will claim me at the finish for its ownA2
I'll turn my back on men and face the PoleB2
Beyond the Arctic outposts I will venture all aloneA2
Some Never never Land will be my goalB2
Thank God there's none will miss me for I've been a bird of flightC2
And in my moccasins I'll take my callU
For the Wanderlust has ruled meD2
And the Wanderlust has schooled meD2
And I'm ready for the darkest trail of allU
-
Grim land dim land oh how the vastness callsE2
Far land star land oh how the stillness fallsE2
For you never can tell if it's heaven or hellF2
And I'm taking the trail on trustI
But I haven't a doubtG2
That my soul will leap outG2
On its Wan der lustI
