The Volunteer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEE FGFGHIHIEE JCJCKDKDEE LMLMCDCDNNOO

Sez I My Country calls Well let it callA
I grins perlitely and declines wiv thanksB
Go let 'em plaster every blighted wallA
'Ere's ONE they don't stampede into the ranksB
Them politicians with their greasy waysC
Them empire grabbers fight for 'em No fearD
I've seen this mess a comin' from the daysC
Of Algyserious and AggydearD
I've felt me passion rise and swellE
But wot the 'ell Bill Wot the 'ellE
-
Sez I My Country Mine I likes their cheekF
Me mud bespattered by the cars they driveG
Wot makes my measly thirty bob a weekF
And sweats red blood to keep meself aliveG
Fight for the right to slave that they may spendH
Them in their mansions me 'ere in my slumI
No let 'em fight wot's something to defendH
But me I've nothin' let the Kaiser comeI
And so I cusses 'ard and wellE
But wot the 'ell Bill Wot the 'ellE
-
Sez I If they would do the decent thingJ
And shield the missis and the little 'unsC
Why even I might shout God save the KingJ
And face the chances of them 'ungry gunsC
But we've got three another on the wayK
It's that wot makes me snarl and set me jorD
The wife and nippers wot of 'em I sayK
If I gets knocked out in this blasted warD
Gets proper busted by a shellE
But wot the 'ell Bill Wot the 'ellE
-
Ay wot the 'ell's the use of all this talkL
To day some boys in blue was passin' meM
And some of 'em they 'ad no legs to walkL
And some of 'em they 'ad no eyes to seeM
And well I couldn't look 'em in the faceC
And so I'm goin' goin' to declareD
I'm under forty one and take me placeC
To face the music with the bunch out thereD
A fool you say Maybe you're rightN
I'll 'ave no peace unless I fightN
I've ceased to think I only knowO
I've gotta go Bill gotta goO
