The Smoking Frog Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDEF GHGH IJIJ KHLH MKMK NKNK ONON PNQN KNKN RKRK ININ

Three men I saw beside a barA
Regarding o'er their bottleB
A frog who smoked a rank cigarA
They'd jammed within its throttleB
-
A Pasha frog it must have beenC
So big it as and bloatedD
And from its lips the nicotineE
In graceful festoon floatedF
-
And while the trio jeered and jokedG
As if it quite enjoyed itH
Impassively it smoked and smokedG
It could now well avoid itH
-
A ring of fire its lips were nighI
Yet it seemed all unwittingJ
It could not spit like you and II
Who've learned the art of spittingJ
-
It did not wink it did not shrinkK
As there serene it squatted'H
Its eyes were clear it did not fearL
The fate the Gods allottedH
-
It squatted there with calm sublimeM
Amid their cruel guyingK
Grave as a god and all the timeM
It knew that it was dyingK
-
And somehow then it seemed to meN
These men expectoratingK
Were infinitely less than heN
The dumb thing they were baitingK
-
It seemed to say despite their jokesO
This is my hour of gloryN
It isn't every frog that smokesO
My name will live in storyN
-
Before its nose the smoke aroseP
The flame grew nigher nigherN
And then I saw its bright eyes closeQ
Beside that ring of fireN
-
They turned it on its warty backK
From off its bloated bellyN
It legs jerked out then dangled slackK
It quivered like a jellyN
-
And then the fellows went awayR
Contented with their jokingK
But even as in death it layR
The frog continued smokingK
-
Life's like a lighted fag thought II
We smoke it stale then afterN
Death turns our belly to the skyI
The Gods must have their laughterN
