The Release Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDE FGFGHIHI JIJIKEKETo day within a grog shop near | A |
I saw a newly captured linnet | B |
Who beat against his cage in fear | A |
And fell exhausted every minute | C |
And when I asked the fellow there | D |
If he to sell the bird were willing | E |
He told me with a careless air | D |
That I could have it for a shilling | E |
- | |
And so I bought it cage and all | F |
Although I went without my dinner | G |
And where some trees were fairly tall | F |
And houses shrank and smoke was thinner | G |
The tiny door I open threw | H |
As down upon the grass I sank me | I |
Poor little chap How quick he flew | H |
He didn't even wait to thank me | I |
- | |
Life's like a cage we beat the bars | J |
We bruise our breasts we struggle vainly | I |
Up to the glory of the stars | J |
We strain with flutterings ungainly | I |
And then God opens wide the door | K |
Our wondrous wings are arched for flying | E |
We poise we part we sing we soar | K |
Light freedom love Fools call it Dying | E |
