Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFBGBH IJKLMFNF OPOPPQPQ RDRDSISI PKPKTBTB UPBPPUPUMy glass is filled my pipe is lit | A |
My den is all a cosy glow | B |
And snug before the fire I sit | A |
And wait to feel the old year go | B |
I dedicate to solemn thought | C |
Amid my too unthinking days | D |
This sober moment sadly fraught | C |
With much of blame with little praise | D |
- | |
Old Year upon the Stage of Time | E |
You stand to bow your last adieu | F |
A moment and the prompter's chime | E |
Will ring the curtain down on you | F |
Your mien is sad your step is slow | B |
You falter as a Sage in pain | G |
Yet turn Old Year before you go | B |
And face your audience again | H |
- | |
That sphinx like face remote austere | I |
Let us all read whate'er the cost | J |
O Maiden why that bitter tear | K |
Is it for dear one you have lost | L |
Is it for fond illusion gone | M |
For trusted lover proved untrue | F |
O sweet girl face so sad so wan | N |
What hath the Old Year meant to you | F |
- | |
And you O neighbour on my right | O |
So sleek so prosperously clad | P |
What see you in that aged wight | O |
That makes your smile so gay and glad | P |
What opportunity unmissed | P |
What golden gain what pride of place | Q |
What splendid hope O Optimist | P |
What read you in that withered face | Q |
- | |
And You deep shrinking in the gloom | R |
What find you in that filmy gaze | D |
What menace of a tragic doom | R |
What dark condemning yesterdays | D |
What urge to crime what evil done | S |
What cold confronting shape of fear | I |
O haggard haunted hidden One | S |
What see you in the dying year | I |
- | |
And so from face to face I flit | P |
The countless eyes that stare and stare | K |
Some are with approbation lit | P |
And some are shadowed with despair | K |
Some show a smile and some a frown | T |
Some joy and hope some pain and woe | B |
Enough Oh ring the curtain down | T |
Old weary year it's time to go | B |
- | |
My pipe is out my glass is dry | U |
My fire is almost ashes too | P |
But once again before you go | B |
And I prepare to meet the New | P |
Old Year a parting word that's true | P |
For we've been comrades you and I | U |
I thank God for each day of you | P |
There bless you now Old Year good bye | U |
