For supper we had curried tripeA
I washed the dishes wound the clockB
Then for awhile I smoked my pipeA
Puff Puff We had no word of talkC
The Misses sewed a sober pairD
Says I at last I need some airD
-
A don't know why I acted soE
I had no thought no plot no planF
I did not really mean to goE
I'm such a docile little manF
But suddenly I felt that IG
Must change my life or I would dieG
-
A sign I saw A ROOM TO LETH
It had a musty dusty smellI
It gloated gloom it growled and yetH
Somehow I felt I liked it wellI
I paid the rent a month aheadJ
That night I smoked my pipe in bedJ
-
From out my world I disappearedK
My walk and talk changed over nightL
I bought black glasses grew a beardK
Abysmally I dropped from sightL
Old Tax Collector Mister SmithM
Became a memory a mythM
-
I see my wife in widow's weedsN
She's gained in weight since I have goneO
My pension serves her modest needsN
She keeps the old apartment onP
And living just a block awayQ
I meet her nearly every dayQ
-
I hope she doesn't mourn too muchR
She has a sad and worried lookS
One day we passed and chanced to touchR
But as with sudden fear I shookS
So blankly in my face she peeredK
I had to chuckle in my beardK
-
Oh comfort is a blessed thingT
But forty years of it I hadU
I never drank the wine of SpringT
No moon has ever made me madU
I never clutched the skirts of ChanceV
Nor daftly dallied with RomanceV
-
And that is why I seek to saveW
My soul before it is too lateX
To put between me and the graveW
A few years of fantastic fateX
I've won to happiness becauseY
I've killed the man that once I wasZ
-
I've murdered Income Taxer SmithM
And now I'm Johnny Jones to youA2
I have no home no kin no kithM
I do the things I want to doA2
No matter though I've not a friendB2
I've won to freedom in the endB2
-
Bohemian born I guess was IG
And should my wife her widowhoodB2
By wedlock end I will not sighG
But pack my grip and go for goodB2
To live in lands where laws are laxC2
And innocent of Income TaxC2
