They say she speeded wanton wildA
When she was warm with wineB
And so she killed a little childA
Could have been yours or mineB
The Judge's verdict was not mildA
And heavy was the fineB

And yet I see her driving stillC
But maybe with more careD
Oh I should hate a child to killC
With vine leaves in my hairD
I think that I should grieve untilC
Life was too bleak to bearD
-
I think that I would see each dayE
That child in beauty growF
How she would haunt me in her playE
And I would watch her goF
To School a dancing on her wayE
With gladness all aglowF
-
And then one day I might believeG
With angel eyes ashineB
She'd say to me 'Please do not grieveG
Maybe the fault was mineB
Take heart to Heaven's comfort cleaveG
For am I not divine '-

I think I know how I would feelH
If I a child should slayE
The rest of living I would kneelH
And for God's pity prayE
Madam I saw you at the wheelH
Of your new car todayE
