The Hat Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEE GHGH IJIJ

In city shop a hat I sawA
That to my fancy seemed to strikeB
I gave my wage to buy the strawA
And make myself a one the likeB
-
I wore it to the village fairC
Oh proud I was though poor was ID
The maids looked at me with a stareC
The lads looked at me with a sighD
-
I wore it Sunday to the MassE
The other girls wore handkerchiefsF
I saw them darkly watch and passE
With sullen smiles with hidden griefsE
-
And then with sobbing fear I fledG
But they waylayed me on the streetH
And tore the hat from off my headG
And trampled it beneath their feetH
-
I sought the Church my grief was wildI
And by my mother's grave I satJ
I've never cried for clay cold childI
As I wept for that ruined hatJ
