Because my overcoat's in pawn	A
I choose to take my glass	B
Within a little bistro on	C
The rue du Montparnasse	B
The dusty bins with bottles shine	D
The counter's lined with zinc	E
And there I sit and drink my wine	D
And think and think and think	E

I think of hoary old Stamboul	F
Of Moslem and of Greek	G
Of Persian in coat of wool	F
Of Kurd and Arab sheikh	G
Of all the types of weal and woe	H
And as I raise my glass	B
Across Galata bridge I know	H
They pass and pass and pass	B

I think of citron trees aglow	H
Of fan palms shading down	I
Of sailors dancing heel and toe	H
With wenches black and brown	I
And though it's all an ocean far	J
From Yucatan to France	B
I'll bet beside the old bazaar	J
They dance and dance and dance	B

I think of Monte Carlo where	K
The pallid croupiers call	F
And in the gorgeous guilty air	K
The gamblers watch the ball	F
And as I flick away the foam	L
With which my beer is crowned	M
The wheels beneath the gilded dome	L
Go round and round and round	M

I think of vast Niagara	N
Those gulfs of foam a shine	D
Whose mighty roar would stagger a	N
More prosy bean than mine	D
And as the hours I idly spend	O
Against a greasy wall	F
I know that green the waters bend	O
And fall and fall and fall	F

I think of Nijni Novgorod	P
And Jews who never rest	Q
And womenfolk with spade and hod	Q
Who slave in Buda Pest	Q
Of squat and sturdy Japanese	B
Who pound the paddy soil	F
And as I loaf and smoke at ease	B
They toil and toil and toil	F

I think of shrines in Hindustan	R
Of cloistral glooms in Spain	S
Of minarets in Ispahan	S
Of St Sophia's fane	S
Of convent towers in Palestine	S
Of temples in Cathay	T
And as I stretch and sip my wine	S
They pray and pray and pray	T

And so my dreams I dwell within	S
And visions come and go	H
And life is passing like a Cin	S
Ematographic Show	H
Till just as surely as my pipe	U
Is underneath my nose	B
Amid my visions rich and ripe	U
I doze and doze and doze	B
