Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHGHIJI KLKMN NO PQPQRSRS

My mother loved her horses andA
Her hounds of pedigreeB
She did not kiss the baby handC
I held to her in gleeB
Of course I had a sweet nou nouD
Who tended me with careE
And mother reined her nag to viewF
Me with a critic airE
-
So I went to a famous schoolG
But holidays were shortH
My mother thought me just a foolG
Unfit for games and sportH
For I was fond of books and artI
And hated hound and steedJ
Said Mother 'Boy you break my heartI
You are not of our breed '-
-
Then came the War The Mater saidK
'Thank God a son I giveL
To King and Country ' well I'm deadK
Who would have loved to liveM
'For England's sake ' said she 'he diedN
For that my boy I bore '-
And now she talks of me with prideN
A hero of the WarO
-
Mother I think that you are gladP
I ended up that wayQ
Your horses and your dogs you hadP
And still you have todayQ
Your only child you say you gaveR
Your Country to defendS
Dear Mother from a hero's graveR
I curse you in the endS
