Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHII JJKKKK| I envy not those gay galoots | A |
| Who count on dying in their boots | A |
| For that to tell the sober truth | B |
| Sould be the privilege of youth | B |
| But aged bones are better sped | C |
| To heaven from a downy bed | C |
| - | |
| So prop me up with pillows two | D |
| And serve me with the barley brew | D |
| And put a pencil in my hand | E |
| A copy book at my command | E |
| And let my final effort be | F |
| To ring a rhyme of homely glee | F |
| - | |
| For since I've loved it oh so long | G |
| Let my last labour be in song | G |
| And when my pencil falters down | H |
| Oh may a final couplet crown | H |
| The years of striving I have made | I |
| To justify the jinglers trade | I |
| - | |
| Let me surrender with a rhyme | J |
| My long and lovely lease of time | J |
| Let me be grateful for the gift | K |
| To couple words in lyric lift | K |
| Let me song build with humble hod | K |
| My last brick dedicate to God | K |
