I saw the Greatest Man on EarthB
Aye saw him with my proper eyesC
A loin cloth spanned his proper girthB
But he was naked otherwiseC
Excepting for his grey sombreroD
And when his domelike head he baredE
With reverence I stared and staredE
As mummified as any PharaohD
-
He leaned upon a little caneF
A big cigar was in his mouthG
Through spectacles of yellow stainF
He gazed and gazed toward the SouthG
And then he dived into the seaH
As if to Corsica to swimI
His side stroke was so strong and freeH
I could not help but envy himI
-
A fitter man than I I saidJ
Although his age is more than mineK
And I was strangely comfortedL
To see him battle in the brineK
Thought I We have no cause for sorrowD
For one so dynamic to dayM
Will gird him for the future frayM
And lead us lion like to morrowD
-
The Greatest Man in all the worldN
Lay lazing like you or meH
Within a flimsy bathrobe curledN
Upon a mattress by the seaH
He reached to pat a tou tou's noseO
And scratched his torso now and thenP
And scribbled with a fountain penP
What I assumed was jewelled proseO
-
And then methought he looked at meH
And hailed me with a gesture grandQ
His fingers made the letter VH
So I too went to raise my handQ
When nigh to me the barman glidedL
With liquid gold and then I knewR
He merely called for cock tails twoR
And so abjectly I subsidedL
-
Yet I have had my moment's gloryH
A squatting nigh that Mighty ToryH
Proud Hero of our Island StoryH
