Alas upon some starry heightA
The Gods of Excellence to pleaseB
This hand of mine will never smiteA
The Harp of High SerenitiesB
Mere minstrel of the street am IC
To whom a careless coin you flingD
But who beneath the bitter skyC
Blue lipped yet insolent of eyeC
Can shrill a song of SpringD
A song of merry mansard daysB
The cheery chimney tops amongE
Of rolics and of roundelaysB
When we were young when we were youngE
A song of love and lilac nightsB
Of wit of wisdom and of wineF
Of Folly whirling on the HeightsB
Of hunger and of hope divineF
Of Blanche Suzette and CelestineG
And all that gay and tender bandA
Who shared with us the fat the leanH
The hazard of Illusion landA
When scores of Philistines we slewI
As mightily with brush and penJ
We sought to make the world anewI
And scorned the gods of other menJ
When we were fools divinely wiseB
Who held it rapturous to striveK
When Art was sacred in our eyesB
And it was Heav'n to be aliveK
-
O days of glamor glory truthL
To you to night I raise my glassB
O freehold of immortal youthL
Bohemia the lost alasB
O laughing lads who led the rompM
Respectable you've grown I'm toldA
Your heads you bow to power and pompM
You've learned to know the worth of goldA
O merry maids who shared our cheerN
Your eyes are dim your locks are grayO
And as you scrub I sadly fearN
Your daughters speed the dance to dayO
O windmill land and crescent moonP
O Columbine and PierretteO
To you my old guitar I tuneP
Ere I forget ere I forgetO
-
So come good men who toil and tireQ
Who smoke and sip the kindly cupR
Ring round about the tavern fireQ
Ere yet you drink your liquor upR
And hear my simple songs of earthS
Of youth and truth and living thingsB
Of poverty and proper mirthS
Of rags and rich imaginingsB
Of cock a hoop blue heavened daysB
Of hearts elate and eager breathT
Of wonder worship pity praiseB
Of sorrow sacrifice and deathT
Of lusting laughter passion painU
Of lights that lure and dreams that thrallV
And if a golden word I gainU
Oh kindly folks God save you allV
And if you shake your heads in blameW
Good friends God love you all the sameW
