Rhyme Scheme: AB CDCEEFEF GHGHEFEF IHIHJFJF KAKLMFFF GEGEEFEF FNFNGFGFCourage mes gars | A |
La guerre est proche | B |
- | |
I plant my little plot of beans | C |
I sit beneath my cyprus tree | D |
I do not know what trouble means | C |
I cultivate tranquillity | E |
But as to day my walk I made | E |
In all serenity and cheer | F |
I saw cut in an agave blade | E |
Courage my comrades war is near | F |
- | |
Seward I went my feet were slow | G |
Awhile I dowsed upon the shore | H |
And then I roused with fear for lo | G |
I saw six grisly ships of war | H |
A grim grey line of might and dread | E |
Against the skyline looming sheer | F |
With horror to myself I said | E |
Courage my comrades war is near | F |
- | |
I saw my cottage on the hill | I |
With rambling roses round the door | H |
It was so peaceful and so still | I |
I sighed and then it was no more | H |
A flash of flame a rubble heap | J |
I cried aloud with woe and fear | F |
And wok myself from troubled sleep | J |
My home was safe war was not near | F |
- | |
Oh I am old my step is frail | K |
My carcase bears a score of scars | A |
And as I climbed my homeward trail | K |
Sadly I thought of other wars | L |
And when that agave leaf I saw | M |
With vicious knife I made a blear | F |
Of words clean cut into the raw | F |
Courage my comrades war is near | F |
- | |
Who put hem there I do not know | G |
One of these rabid reds no doubt | E |
But I for freedom struck my blow | G |
With bitter blade I scraped them out | E |
There now said I I will forget | E |
And smoke my pipe and drink my beer | F |
Yet in my mind these words were set | E |
Courage my comrades war is near | F |
- | |
Courage my comrades war is near | F |
I hear afar its hateful drums | N |
Its horrid din assails my ear | F |
I hope I die before it comes | N |
Yet as into the town I go | G |
And listen to the rabble cheer | F |
I think with heart of weary woe | G |
War is not coming WAR IS HERE | F |
