'A man should write to please himself 'A
He proudly saidB
Well see his poems on the shelfC
Dusty unreadB
-
When he came to my shop each dayD
So peaked and coldE
I'd sneak one of his books awayD
And say 'twas soldE
-
And then by chance he looked belowF
And saw a stackG
Of his own work speechless with woeF
He came not backG
-
I hate to think he took to drinkH
And passed awayD
I have not heard of him a wordI
Unto this dayD
-
A man must write to please himselfC
Of all it's trueJ
But happy they who spurning pelfC
Please people tooJ
