Orphan School Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHBHB IFIFJIJI

Full fifty merry maids I heardA
One summer morn a singingB
And each was like a joyous birdA
With spring clear not a ringingB
It was an old time soldier songC
That held their happy voicesD
Oh how it's good to swing alongC
When youth rejoicesD
-
Then lo I dreamed long years had goneE
They passed again ungladlyF
Their backs were bent their cheeks were wanG
Their eyes were staring sadlyF
Their ranks were thinned by full a scoreH
From death's remorseless reapingB
Their steps were slow they sang no moreH
Nay some were weepingB
-
Dark dream I saw my maids todayI
Singing so innocentlyF
Their eyes with happiness were gayI
They looked at me so gentlyF
Thought I Be merry in your youthJ
With hearts unrueingI
Thank God you do not know the truthJ
Of Life's UndoingI
