Orphan School Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHBHB IFIFJIJIFull fifty merry maids I heard | A |
One summer morn a singing | B |
And each was like a joyous bird | A |
With spring clear not a ringing | B |
It was an old time soldier song | C |
That held their happy voices | D |
Oh how it's good to swing along | C |
When youth rejoices | D |
- | |
Then lo I dreamed long years had gone | E |
They passed again ungladly | F |
Their backs were bent their cheeks were wan | G |
Their eyes were staring sadly | F |
Their ranks were thinned by full a score | H |
From death's remorseless reaping | B |
Their steps were slow they sang no more | H |
Nay some were weeping | B |
- | |
Dark dream I saw my maids today | I |
Singing so innocently | F |
Their eyes with happiness were gay | I |
They looked at me so gently | F |
Thought I Be merry in your youth | J |
With hearts unrueing | I |
Thank God you do not know the truth | J |
Of Life's Undoing | I |
